Part 2: The Students of the Future
Sandeen, CA, (ed) 2014, The Students of the Future, ACE Presidential Innovation Lab White Paper Series.
The article, “Demography as Destiny,” though a bit dated, is nevertheless worthy of our consideration. It baldy lays out a challenge for us: “... [P]ostsecondary institutions are being asked
to graduate more students with credentials that have value in the labor market at a reduced cost per student, while servicing a diversifying student body less likely to arrive on campus fully
prepared academically for college and with limited financial resources to pay for it, all without negatively impacting educational quality.” To this challenge, can be added the differences in learning styles and technological facility outlined in the “Students of the Future” piece. While some may like to believe that we are immune, to do so is unrealistic; it is impossible to deny that these trends and expectations affect our ability to recruit, retain, and support students in the face of increasing competition among educational institutions. How might we think about in what ways Morris can respond to this multifaceted challenge?
