Artist and Spring 2021  Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Liberal Arts Steve Rowell presents his 2010-11 project The Cold Coast Archive which features sounds, videos, and photographs from his 2011 visit to the remote Arctic island of Spitsbergen, home to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Buried in a frozen mountainside and hardened to survive a nuclear assault, the SGSV (nicknamed the “Doomsday Vault”) is the most robust seed vault in the world, designed to protect its contents from all imaginable worst-case scenarios, including the inevitable — catastrophic climate change. The evening program includes a screening of his 2012 short film In the Best of All Possible Worlds.
