Visiting Alum in Science and Mathematics: Robert Smith ’13 — Presentation

From Physics to Data Science:
A Journey into Energy Analytics

Robert Smith is a data scientist with Nexant, which provides consulting services to utility clients. He has spent his career applying advanced statistics and machine learning to a range of smart grid and customer segmentation opportunities for municipal and investor-owned utilities. In addition to executing advanced analytics, Smith is a guiding voice in data science best practices and creation of sound organizational data science strategies. Prior to joining Nexant, Smith worked for Xcel Energy, where he provided guidance on developing a robust end-to-end data science pipeline and executed big data use-cases to demonstrate the value of advanced analytics. He also led and executed many smart grid, renewable, and demand-side management analytics initiatives for Colorado Springs Utilities, which provided the critical analysis needed for the organization to stay on track for achieving their energy vision. He earned his bachelor of arts in physics and mathematics from the University of Minnesota Morris and a master of engineering in energy systems engineering from Lehigh University.
